Everyday we as adults wake up , make our beads, tend to our daily hygiene and any other routine that will bring some normalcy to our day. We do this in the hopes that we will make our day go smoothly. The same is true when it comes to working with students. Establishing a routine and rules within the first few days and weeks of school goes a long way to make the school year successful. One of the first steps to starting off the year is to establish a good relationship between teacher and the students' family. According to Hemmeter, Ostrosky, & Corso positive relationships between students and their families enhance children’s ability to learn and help them become more comfortable in their surroundings (Hemmeter, Ostrosky, & Corso,2012). At the beginning of the year many students are adjusting to spending all of their time with their families over the summer. In order to help them into the classroom routine it is important that teachers show students that they can relate to where they come from and their background. Building relationships with parents also helps with communication through out the school year.
Another aspect of the first few weeks of school that is important is setting up the classroom for learning. A lot of classroom management happens non-verbally by making sure that the classroom is set up in a way that classroom lesson flow . However ,classroom environment is not always about the physical space. It also about the people within the environment . Student to student interaction is a crucial part of the classroom (Patrick et al., 2001). During the first few days it is important to create a sense of community among the students. These students will be spending a large percentage of thier day with each other so a certain level of trust and comradery needs to be developed as soon as possible.
